Udmurtia – Region of Development

Socio-economic development of Udmurtia is determined by:

Environment and Climate

The republic is located in the western part of the Middle Ural, between the Kama and the Vyatka rivers. It spans the territory of 180 km from west to east and 270 km from north to south. The Udmurt Republic is situated in the moderate continental climate zone, with hot summers and cold winters with a lot of snow.

Natural Resources

The most important natural resources include wood and oil. There are 114 effective oil deposits on the territory of the republic. 96 % of produced oil is exported. About 7-8 million tons are extracted annually.

Forests cover 46 % of the territory, with half of them being coniferous. Allowable final cut is 2.3 million cu. m. The republic has peat reserves, nitrogen-methane deposits and construction materials, such as quartz sand, clay, and limestone. It is rich in mineral resources and therapeutic mud as well.

Geographic Location

The distance between Izhevsk, the capital of the Udmurt Republic, and Moscow, the capital of the Russian Federation, is 1,129 km, Saint Petersburg – 1,904 km, Yekaterinburg – 800 km, Kazan – 395 km. The Udmurt Republic borders on Kirov Oblast to the west and north, Perm Krai to the east, and Bashkortorstan and Tatarstan to the south.

Automobile Transport

The Udmurt Republic is crossed by several federal roads, such as Р242, Р320, Р321, Р322.

Air Transport

Izhevsk Airport

The only republic’s airport is situated in the city of Izhevsk. Air transfers are operated by OAO Izhavia that makes regular cargo and passenger flights. The destination network of OAO Izhavia includes 15 scheduled flights (including seasonal flights) and 12 charter flights (mainly for gas and oil workers). The network has a total length of skyways of about 20,000 km. OAO Izhavia has licenses to operate regular passenger and cargo flights on 14 airways.

Railway Transport

Rail transport is the largest interregional carrier of passengers and cargo in the Udmurt Republic. It is the most economical way of cargo shipment from different regions of Russia or to a shipping place in a port. Railways cross the Udmurt Republic in east-west and north-south directions. The main transit routes are double-track electrified lines:

Kazan – Agryz – Yekaterinburg (Southern Route) served by the Izhevsk department of the Gorky Railway which is a subsidiary of the Russian Railways;

Kazan – Balezino – Perm (Northern Route) served by the Kirov department of the Gorky Railway which is a subsidiary of the Russian Railways.

Internal ship transport of the Udmurt Republic is represented by two enterprises:

OAO Sarapul River Port

Sarapul River Port is located in the town of Sarapul on the right bank of the Kama River. The port operates on the stretch of the Kama River from the village of Olkhovka (inclusive) to the town of Nepryakha (exclusive). The guaranteed depths for this stretch are 330 cm. For lift-on/lift-off, the port can take ships with a carrying capacity of up to 5,000 tons. The port is situated on the international railway West-East, the inside port railways link up with Sarapul railway station. There are also cargo ships that work in the Volga-Kama basin.

OAO Kambarka Port

The deep water river port Kambarka is situated on the left bank of the Kama River in the village of Kama. The port Kambarka operates within the Kama’s basin from the town of Nepryakha (inclusive) to the town of Krasny Bor (exclusive). The depths down the river from the port are not controlled during the whole period of navigation (380 cm and more), the depths up the river from the port are controlled to be 310 cm. For lift-on/lift-off, the port can take the ships with a carrying capacity of up to 5,000 tons. The port is located at the international railway West-East, the inside port railways link up with Kama railway station. The port can admit and handle river-marine vessels. Cargo transportation lines served by OAO Kambarka Port are Kambarka – customers’ docks on the Kama River.

Manufacturing

The Udmurt Republic is a republic with developed manufacturing and diversified agriculture. The republic also has the highest rate of defense industry enterprises in Russia.

The main industries include machine building, metalworking, ferrous metallurgy, and wood?working industry. The power industry is represented by a complex of thermal power stations in Izhevsk, Sarapul, Votkinsk, and Glazov, the biggest of which is CHPP-2. Metallurgical production is concentrated in Izhevsk, and foundry is located mainly in Izhevsk and Votkinsk. Production of cars and motor vans, papermaking machines, motorcycles, bearings (shutdown), oil field equipment, hunting weapon and sport guns, chemical equipment should also be mentioned. Forest logging is held in the northern and western parts of the republic; wood is used for producing of timber, furniture, and house-building constructions. A significant part of enterprises in the republic is connected with the military-industrial complex of Russia.

OAO Izhmash, formerly known as Izhevsk Weapons Plant, is the largest manufacturer of small arms in Russia founded in 1807 at the decree of Tsar Alexander I.

Agriculture

Cultivated lands make up nearly 50% of the territory of the republic. Cattle and swine prevail in livestock; there is also sheep and poultry breeding. Among the cultivated crops are rye, wheat, buckwheat, barley, oats, millet, peas, corn, sunflower, flax, rape, potatoes, vegetables, and forage crops.
