Over the past two decades SMW Engineering (SMW), has become the world-leading manufacturer of wrought magnesium alloy components, primarily wheels. SMW proprietary closed-die net-shape forging process ensures the desired metal flow with directional fiber positioning, with higher degree of deformation for optimal grain structure. There is not flow-forming (spinning) involved; we produce only true-forged wheels. This results in superior metallurgical characteristics and improved mechanical properties. Our proprietary billet casting technology ensures ultra-small grain size and thus enhanced strength, stiffness and fatigue characteristics of the finished part. SMW is the selected manufacturer for the most reputable wheels brands. All Ducati motorcycles’ magnesium wheels are forged by SMW. Our wheels are forged for F1 and most of the MotoGP teams, as well as other championship classes. Reference letters can be furnished upon request.
SMW has participated in “MagForming”, “Aeromag”, “PowderBond” and “AeroFML” international research projects mostly funded by the European Commission, in partnership with such end-users as Airbus, Boeing, Jaguar Land Rover, EADS, Thales, Fraunhofer, and others.
SMW was founded in Russia in 1996, as an affiliate of Solikamsk Magnesium Works, one of the world’s largest producers of magnesium alloys, titanium sponge, tantalum and niobium oxides and rare-earth metals derivatives. Since 2004 SMW has internationalized and acquired companies with manufacturing capabilities in Bulgaria, Estonia and Latvia. SMW and its affiliates hold a number of patents related to high-performance alloys, and additional patent applications are pending.
